For international travelers entering mainland China on a foreign passport · Updated March 2026
The three options below cover every phone type — whether or not your phone supports eSIM, there's a clear solution for you. One rule applies to all of them: everything must be set up before you depart. Fixing it after arrival in China is extremely difficult.
Lowest cost, no VPN needed. Install before departure and you're online the moment you land. Requires eSIM-compatible phone.
No SIM swap needed. Connects automatically on arrival. Also unrestricted by the Great Firewall. Higher cost — best for short trips or older phones.
Only for travelers who need a Chinese local number and have already installed a working VPN before leaving. VPN must be installed before departure — impossible to download after arrival.

After selecting a data plan, you'll receive a QR code or activation code. Choose a plan with a bit of extra data — China navigation and maps are data-hungry.
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR Code
Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Card Manager → Add Mobile Plan
Once added, you don't need to activate it yet — just leave it installed and off.
Open Settings and confirm the travel eSIM appears in your SIM list. Screenshot the activation code as a backup in case the app logs you out.
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Select travel eSIM → Enable "Data Roaming"
Usually connects within 30 seconds. Open Google Maps or WhatsApp to verify.
Some plans have roaming disabled by default. Enable it manually in Settings or contact your carrier to confirm.
Choose a daily or monthly plan that covers your trip. Screenshot the plan details after activating.
Your phone will switch to a local network automatically. Open a browser or Google Maps to confirm connectivity.
This option is only recommended if you meet both of the following conditions:
Go to the App Store or Google Play and download one of the recommended VPNs below.
Choose a short-term plan suited to your trip length. Connect once on your home network to confirm it works.
In case the app logs you out in China. We recommend installing 2 VPN apps as backup — no single VPN can be guaranteed to work 100% of the time.
Visit a carrier counter at the airport with your passport to get a local SIM. Insert the SIM, enable mobile data, then launch your VPN and test whether you can reach Google.
China has only three official carriers. "China SIM cards" from unofficial sources carry a real risk of not working.
